Enugu Woman Alleges Mob Assault After Witchcraft Accusation
An elderly woman in Amanfu, Ugbawka, Nkanu East LGA of Enugu State, was allegedly assaulted and publicly humiliated after being accused of witchcraft. A human-rights advocacy group said a video of the incident showed the woman being paraded and subjected to degrading treatment. She reportedly sustained injuries and later appealed for justice. The group said the accusation was linked to claims that she desecrated the grave of her stepson’s late wife. The woman reportedly sought safety at Emmanuel Anglican Church, but a group of community women allegedly demanded that she be released to face what they called community laws. The advocacy group has urged the Enugu State Government, police and other relevant agencies to provide medical care and protection for the woman, and investigate and prosecute those responsible.
