When Institutional Failure Elevates Self-Appointed Advocates

When public institutions fail for too long, they create a vacuum that is often filled by the loudest voices rather than the most qualified or accountable people. I believe the failure of the police and justice system has made many Nigerians desperate for anyone who appears willing to speak up for ordinary people. In that environment, confidence and visibility can be mistaken for legitimacy, even when a person has no mandate or oversight. The concern is not only about self-appointed advocates, but also about conduct. Insults, intimidation and alleged attempts to profit from access or influence should not be confused with genuine public service. The lasting solution is to rebuild institutions that deliver justice and accountability. Until then, public desperation will continue to create space for unaccountable voices to present themselves as representatives of the masses.
