Fani-Kayode Says He Knows Atiku’s Position on Nigeria Airways Pension Debate
Former Aviation Minister Femi Fani-Kayode says he knows the position Atiku Abubakar took during a Federal Executive Council debate on unpaid pensions for former Nigeria Airways workers. He said he would not disclose it because cabinet decisions were collective responsibilities. Fani-Kayode said he presented a memo in 2006 seeking approval to pay the outstanding pensions, following recommendations from a committee led by then Head of Service Yayale Ahmed. According to him, the proposal was rejected after some cabinet members argued that former boards and management of the defunct airline had contributed to its collapse. He said Nigeria Airways was liquidated after years of debt, mismanagement and operational failures, while acknowledging that the decision left workers with unpaid entitlements. He commended the current administration for approving the payment of the remaining pensions, reportedly valued at ₦36 billion.
