Lagos Government Urges Residents to Maintain and Secure Government Housing Estates

Lagos Government Urges Residents to Maintain and Secure Government Housing Estates

Lagos State Ministry of Housing held a stakeholders’ meeting at Millennium Housing Estate, Agbado-Ijaiye, calling on residents to take responsibility for the upkeep of their neighbourhoods. The goal is to preserve infrastructure, boost security and sustain property values. The Permanent Secretary highlighted the need for residents to address minor repairs promptly and settle service charges, insurance premiums and land use obligations. He warned that those who default would face enforcement under existing regulations. The Director of the Estate Department introduced a standardised demand notice and unique payment codes for all allottees to ensure transparency and timely reconciliation. Representatives from LAWMA, the Fire and Rescue Service, NSCDC and other agencies also provided guidance on waste management, fire safety and urban renewal projects, including the redevelopment of the old Jakande Estate in Lekki.

It's interesting they emphasize resident responsibility, but I wonder if existing security challenges and funding gaps were addressed at the meeting.

Relying on residents for upkeep sounds good on paper, yet without clear timelines or support, this plan risks becoming another empty promise.

Residents could form estate committees to schedule regular cleanups, coordinate security patrols and liaise with officials for faster repairs.
