South African Woman Sentenced to 25 Years for Smuggling Heroin into Nigeria
A Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced a 38-year-old South African woman to 25 years in prison for importing 5.75kg of heroin into Nigeria. She was arrested at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport after arriving from Doha on a Qatar Airways flight with her three-year-old son. She later pleaded guilty to the charge brought by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency. The court imposed 15 years on one count and 25 years on another, to run concurrently. The judge said the law was not guided by emotion and ordered the heroin destroyed if no appeal is filed within the legally allowed period.
