NDC Urges Hanga, Gaya to Rethink Reported Defection to APC

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has urged Kano Central Senator Rufai Sani Hanga and former Kano State governor Kabiru Ibrahim Gaya to reconsider reports that they may defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC). The appeal follows their visit to President Bola Tinubu in Abuja alongside Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin. The APC national chairman had also visited both politicians, increasing speculation about a possible move. Kano NDC chairman Hussaini Isah Mairiga said the party remains concerned but still considers Hanga and Gaya members. He asked them to discuss any grievances with the party leadership before making a final decision. A political analyst said defections by influential figures could weaken the NDC and the Kwankwasiyya movement in Kano, particularly if the politicians retain strong grassroots structures in Kano Central and Kano South.

Are you asking whether they should consider their supporters' interests or the wider political implications first?

The appeal comes after their visit to President Tinubu, so the timing will naturally keep attention on the defection reports.

A visit to the President does not by itself settle the question of defection; the reports still need to be treated carefully.

The clearest next step is for Hanga and Gaya to state their positions directly, so supporters are not left interpreting visits and appeals.
