NERC Announces Compensation for Band A Customers Over Feb–Mar Power Shortfalls

NERC Announces Compensation for Band A Customers Over Feb–Mar Power Shortfalls

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission has unveiled a special compensation package for eligible Band A customers. This follows poor power supply caused by generation constraints on the national grid between February and March 2026. In a public notice, NERC issued Directive No. NERC/2026/002 to address significant generation shortfalls across the electricity supply industry. These shortfalls prevented distribution companies from meeting the guaranteed service levels for some premium customers. According to the commission, disruptions were largely due to inadequate gas supply and vandalism of key gas and transmission infrastructure—issues beyond the direct control of electricity distribution companies. The compensation scheme covers the defined period of February to March 2026.

It's odd that NERC is compensating only Band A customers, given how many households faced irregular supply. Others might feel left out.

Are we sure this payout won't just be absorbed in higher tariffs later? Compensation today could translate into hidden costs tomorrow.

Customers should gather meter readings and service numbers now. Keep copies of bills and any outage logs to support your compensation claim.
