Tech. Sgt. Ian Patterson died after he was injured during a pre-game rappelling demonstration at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. The incident happened before a football game between Navy and the University of Texas at San Antonio. Witnesses said Patterson was one of three service members descending from the stadium ceiling when he began to fall rapidly. Emergency responders took him to hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Patterson had served in the US Air Force for 15 years and was assigned to the 6th Combat Training Squadron, Detachment 2.
