Four Nigerian NHS Staff Face Regulator Referral After Patient’s Death in UK Mental Health Unit
A UK coroner found that serious neglect contributed to the unlawful killing of 34-year-old Hugo Flint Cahan at an east London mental health unit in January 2023. Hugo was allegedly attacked by another patient after staff failed to carry out required observations. The inquest heard that some staff slept, used their phones and falsified observation records. Hugo was discovered almost two hours after he was believed to have been attacked, while emergency services were called later and CPR was delayed. The coroner recommended that four staff members be referred to their professional regulator and asked the Metropolitan Police to review its investigation. The NHS trust apologised to Hugo’s family and said it is working to improve patient safety, staff conduct and record-keeping.
