FG Moves to Terminate Benin-Asaba Road Concession Over Prolonged Gridlock
The Federal Government has ordered the Benin-Asaba Expressway Concession Company to vacate the Benin-Asaba highway site, citing months of severe gridlock and poor progress on repairs. Works Minister David Umahi said the company had failed to show the capacity to fix the road. He directed it to clear traffic blockages immediately and asked the Ministry of Works to assess completed work through the Independent Engineer. Umahi said defective work and asphalt removed outside the contract terms would not be paid for. The government plans to repair the most critical sections quickly while beginning the process of terminating the concession. Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo and Senator Allwell Onyesoh also criticised the state of the road, describing the hardship for motorists and residents as unacceptable.
