Inside Fisayo Soyombo’s 47-Day Undercover Journey on the Nigeria-Libya Migration Route

Investigative journalist Fisayo Soyombo spent 47 days travelling undercover along an irregular migration route from Nigeria through Niger and the Sahara Desert towards Libya. His investigation describes starvation, extortion, abuse, torture, sexual violence and deaths faced by African migrants hoping to eventually reach Europe. He travelled from Kano through Magaria, Zinder, Agadez and Dirkou before continuing towards Libya. Soyombo said he paid about ₦1.3 million to a connection man who promised to arrange his journey to Libya but later abandoned him. The report also documents the experiences of migrants from Nigeria, Ghana, Niger, South Sudan, Eritrea and Somalia, including an 18-day wait in Agadez.
