Police Hunt Suspects Over Theft of Queen Nazli’s 673-Diamond Necklace in Vienna
Austrian police are searching for two men accused of stealing a platinum necklace set with 673 diamonds from Vienna’s Museum of Applied Arts. The 200-carat piece, once owned by Egypt’s Queen Nazli, was reportedly taken after the suspects smashed its glass display case with a hammer during visiting hours. The men had reportedly bought tickets to enter the exhibition before fleeing in an unknown direction. No one was injured, although visitors were in the gallery at the time. Police have released CCTV images and used a tracking dog while searching central Vienna. The necklace was displayed as part of an exhibition of rare jewellery associated with Van Cleef & Arpels. It was sold at auction in New York in 2015 for $4.3 million. The museum temporarily closed the exhibition and cancelled a scheduled guided tour after the theft.
