DSS Says Sowore’s Request to Subpoena Its Lawyer Could Delay Trial
The Department of State Services (DSS) has told the Federal High Court in Abuja that Omoyele Sowore’s request to subpoena its lead counsel, Akinlolu Kehinde, as a defence witness is intended to delay his trial over alleged cyberbullying of President Bola Tinubu. Sowore is the publisher of Sahara Reporters and a former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC). The DSS argued that the evidence Sowore seeks is irrelevant and that the subpoena should be set aside. It also cited legal protections for communications between lawyers and their clients, and argued that a lawyer should not act as both counsel and witness in the same case. Sowore’s lawyer asked the court to uphold the subpoena, saying it would assist the defence. After hearing both sides, Justice Mohammed Umar adjourned the matter until November 9 for a ruling.
