47 Applicants Allegedly Lose ₦51.8m in Cross River Local Government Jobs Scam
At least 47 applicants allegedly lost more than ₦51.8 million to fake local government job offers during Cross River State’s cancelled 2024/2025 recruitment exercise. The chairman of the state Local Government Service Commission said victims paid between ₦100,000 and ₦1.5 million after being promised employment. Some were reportedly issued fake appointment letters, while the process was also allegedly manipulated to favour relatives and non-residents. A state government panel investigated complaints about the exercise and verified evidence submitted by applicants. Authorities say suspects are being identified for questioning and possible prosecution. The recruitment exercise has been cancelled. While 821 people from the earlier process will be retained, other qualified applicants are expected to take part in a fresh exercise due to begin within two weeks.
