Five US Police Officers Resign Over Alleged Racist Traffic-Stop Group Chat
Five police officers in Charlotte, North Carolina, have resigned after an internal investigation uncovered an alleged group chat containing racist messages. Two other officers were suspended without pay, while another linked to the chat had previously resigned in a separate inquiry. The messages allegedly included a competition over who could stop the most Black drivers. Investigators also found comments raising concerns about racial, religious and sexual bias, as well as discussions about the use of force. The chat was reportedly discovered during an investigation into the alleged misuse of police surveillance technology. The police department is reviewing the officers’ past stops, arrests, camera footage and complaint records, while federal authorities have been asked to examine possible civil-rights violations. Police say their initial review has not yet found proof that the officers specifically targeted Black residents. The investigation remains ongoing.
