FG Begins ₦18bn Severance Payments to 2,700 Former Nigeria Airways Workers
The Federal Government says it has approved ₦18 billion in severance benefits for 2,700 former Nigeria Airways workers, more than 20 years after the airline was liquidated. At a briefing in Abuja, Taiwo Oyedele said 2,100 verified beneficiaries in batches one to seven had already been paid. Payments for about 600 others in batches eight and nine are being finalised. The government said payments are tied to biometric and records verification to prevent fraudulent claims. Families of deceased workers can access benefits through next-of-kin or estate processes, while cases involving incorrect bank details or outdated records will be resolved. The exercise is part of wider efforts to clear verified obligations owed to pensioners and indigenous contractors.
