Asaba Massacre: Retired General’s Son Asks Victims’ Families for Forgiveness
Maj. Gen. Ahmed Taiwo (Rtd), son of the late Col. Ibrahim Taiwo, has asked the people of Asaba to forgive his father and family over the 1967 Asaba Massacre. The massacre occurred during the Nigerian Civil War when federal troops killed civilians in Asaba, now in Delta State. Many residents had joined a procession dressed in white and chanting in support of a united Nigeria. Troops reportedly separated men and older boys from women and young children before opening fire at Ogbe-Osawa. Taiwo said he first learned about the incident more than three decades ago while serving in Enugu and later researched it deeply.
