Dudley Nursery Admits Manslaughter After Toddler Suffocates in Nap Incident
The now-closed Fairytales Day Nursery in Dudley pleaded guilty to corporate manslaughter and a health and safety offence after 14-month-old Noah Sibanda died in December 2022. Owner Deborah Latewood and nursery worker Kimberley Cookson admitted they should have known children were being put to sleep in a dangerous position. CCTV footage showed Noah tightly wrapped in a sleeping bag, face down under a blanket, and restrained by staff during nap time. Noah was found unresponsive and later pronounced dead at hospital. Sentencing for the company, its owner and the worker is set for April 16. The Crown Prosecution Service described the case as “deeply distressing” and a stark reminder of the duty owed by childcare providers.
