Why Are Enugu Women Protesting Prostitution While Security Crumbles?

Why Are Enugu Women Protesting Prostitution While Security Crumbles?

In recent weeks, insecurity in Enugu State has worsened. Bandits, kidnappers and unknown gunmen have restricted movement, closed schools and left many families grieving lost loved ones. Despite this climate of fear, a group of women marched to demand an end to prostitution. Their focus on other women’s lifestyles strikes many observers as a misplaced priority. These protesters could instead leverage their voices to call on the state government to tackle banditry, improve roads, secure water and electricity supplies, and create job opportunities. Those are issues that affect everyone in Enugu and lie squarely within the government’s responsibility.

It strikes me as odd that these protesters ignore reports of kidnappings and school closures while demanding an end to prostitution.

I'm not convinced their protest will change anything if security forces remain overwhelmed by bandits and unknown gunmen.

Authorities should improve patrols and community policing first, then support awareness campaigns against prostitution for safer neighbourhoods.
