Ex-Footballer Found Dead in Jail After Killing Brother and Cannibalism
A former New Jersey footballer was found dead in his Mercer County Jail cell on May 8, 2026, in what officials believe was a suicide. Matthew Hertgen, 31, had been held after a bench trial ruled him not criminally responsible for his brother’s murder. Authorities say Hertgen attacked his 26-year-old brother, Joseph, in their Princeton apartment in February 2025. He allegedly used knives and a golf club, then mutilated the body, removing and eating an eyeball, and set the family cat on fire before calling 911. During the trial, a forensic psychologist testified that Hertgen suffered from schizophrenia and experienced prophetic visions. He believed a sacrificial murder could save the world and had attempted suicide in custody days after his arrest. In an obituary, Hertgen’s family described him as caring despite his mental health battles. They asked well-wishers to support a local mental health nonprofit in his memory.
