NDLEA Says Foreign Traffickers Are Using Nigeria as a Drug Transit Route
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) says foreign nationals are increasingly using Nigeria to move illegal drugs to other countries, while some are also bringing drugs into the country. The agency says recent operations led to the arrest of three South African nationals and the seizure of heroin, cocaine and synthetic cannabis known as Loud. At a security briefing in Abuja, an NDLEA spokesperson said the quantity and variety of drugs recovered may point to links with international trafficking networks. The agency is investigating the drugs’ intended destinations and the groups behind the shipments. Among the cases cited, a woman was arrested at Port Harcourt International Airport in October 2026 over an alleged 32.74-kilogramme shipment of synthetic cannabis. In July, another woman was arrested at Abuja airport after 5.75 kilogrammes of heroin were allegedly found in her luggage.
