Akpabio Threatens Legal Action Over Faulty National Assembly Renovation

Akpabio Threatens Legal Action Over Faulty National Assembly Renovation

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has warned he will take the contractor who refurbished the National Assembly complex to court after repeated technical failures. Despite billions of naira reportedly spent, senators have battled malfunctioning microphones, poor audio quality and a broken electronic voting system since returning in April. These glitches forced both chambers to abandon electronic voting and revert to manual voting during key constitutional amendment debates. During Wednesday’s plenary, Akpabio said he and House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas felt “thoroughly embarrassed” by the faulty installations at the opening of National Assembly Open Week. He noted that the same contractor handled both the Senate and House renovations. Senate leaders are now documenting each technical problem as evidence ahead of possible legal proceedings to ensure the work meets acceptable standards.

Are you asking if the technical specs were flawed or if contractors cut corners during renovation?

Spending billions only to face constant technical breakdowns suggests a serious lapse in project oversight and quality checks.

Blaming the contractor alone ignores the Senate's own role in approving faulty installation plans at every stage of that renovation.

The committee should conduct an independent audit of the audio system installation and enforce stricter quality standards before any future renovations proceed.
