How Onitsha, Owerri, Enugu and Aba Rose as Nigeria’s Leading Urban Centres
The 2026 Global Cities Index, compiled by Oxford Economics, lists 18 Nigerian cities among its top 1,000. Lagos ranks first nationally, followed by Abuja, Onitsha, Owerri and Enugu. Aba places seventh. The strong showing of Onitsha, Owerri, Enugu and Aba highlights the South-East’s long recovery since the Nigerian Civil War. Despite severe wartime destruction, these cities rebuilt through trade, small businesses, education, manufacturing, professional services and entrepreneurship. Onitsha remains a major commercial hub, Owerri has grown into an administrative and hospitality centre, Enugu serves as a regional base for government and services, while Aba remains known for indigenous manufacturing and enterprise. The rankings also underline the need for better infrastructure, security, transport links and industrial investment across the region. The index is more than a league table. It raises a wider question: how much further could these cities grow with deliberate investment in the conditions that allow businesses and residents to thrive?
