Why NDC Exempts Obi and Kwankwaso from Its Anti-Defection Oath

Why NDC Exempts Obi and Kwankwaso from Its Anti-Defection Oath

The Nigeria Democratic Congress has clarified that presidential candidate Peter Obi and his running mate Rabiu Kwankwaso will not sign the party’s new anti-defection affidavit. National Spokesman Ikenna Enekweizu told Channels Television that this decision reflects the party’s internal rules and administrative discretion. Enekweizu stressed that political parties are voluntary associations bound by their constitutions. He dismissed claims that the oath breaches Nigeria’s constitution and explained that it targets legislative candidates, not executive nominees like the president or governors. Under the new policy, assembly members who defect can lose their seats. The NDC says this measure will strengthen party stability and discourage politicians from treating its platform as a temporary stepping stone.

What reasons do you think underlie the NDC's decision to exempt Obi and Kwankwaso from this anti-defection oath?

Are you asking whether their voter appeal or strategic alliance talks influenced that exemption?

I find it odd that they insist on an anti-defection oath for others but carve out special treatment here.

I'm not convinced say this exemption won't set a bad precedent for party discipline.

The NDC should publish clear guidelines explaining this exemption to prevent confusion and maintain trust among party members.
