Shipping Through Strait of Hormuz Rises as More Vessels Use Oman Route
Commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz reportedly increased sharply over the past two weeks, with more vessels using a southern route along Oman’s coast. Maritime tracking data cited by a shipping news outlet indicated that nearly 200 vessels transited the strait last week, including 103 inbound and 89 outbound ships. The report said more than 80% of vessels were using the Omani route. The development has renewed debate over Iran’s ability to disrupt trade through the strategic waterway, as well as the possible effect on global oil prices. Claims that Iran’s oil exports have fallen to zero should be treated cautiously unless independently confirmed.
