Imo Businesswoman Faces High Court Over Attempted Murder of Five-Year-Old Maid
The Imo State government will today arraign 38-year-old businesswoman Juliet Igwe before the Urualla High Court in Owerri. She faces charges of attempted murder and grievous harm against her 5-year-old housemaid, Onyinyechi. Igwe was arrested in December after a human rights group alerted authorities to the severe abuse of the orphaned child. An earlier arraignment before a magistrate was halted when the court said it lacked jurisdiction over the serious charges. On February 5, the state’s Ministry of Justice filed fresh attempted murder and grievous harm counts. The high court arraignment now proceeds, and if convicted, Igwe could face life imprisonment. Advocates welcomed the trial as a necessary step after the child lost three fingers and suffered burns in the assault. Many say the case will send a strong warning to protect vulnerable wards.
