Group Alleges Illegal Visa Overstay Cash Collections at Lagos Airport

The Civic Action Network has alleged that some senior officers of the Nigeria Immigration Service operated an unofficial cash-collection scheme involving foreigners who overstayed their visas at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos. The group claimed that payments meant to be made through approved government channels were allegedly collected through intermediaries. It said the practice, if proven, could cost the Federal Government revenue, weaken immigration records and create security risks. CAN also alleged that officers who resisted the arrangement were transferred, while some personnel on foreign missions faced salary delays. It called for an independent investigation and stronger transparency within the service. The claims have not been independently verified. The NIS leadership, its headquarters and the EFCC had not responded to requests for comment when the statement was issued.
