IPOB Questions Basis for Its 2017 Terrorism Proscription

IPOB has questioned the events that led to the proscription of its activities in the South-East in September 2017. The group asked what alleged terrorist activity occurred between its August 30 meeting with South-East governors and the September 15 proscription. The group said the meeting focused on regional infrastructure, jobs, justice and governance. It listed demands including improved seaports, railways, electricity, healthcare, the Second Niger Bridge and respect for court orders. IPOB also referred to the military operation at Nnamdi Kanu’s Afaraukwu residence on September 14, 2017. It called on the government to provide evidence supporting the terrorism designation and to review the sequence of events surrounding the proscription.
