Highlife Legend Bright Chimezie Celebrates His 66th Birthday
Veteran Nigerian highlife musician Bright Chimezie, known for his Zigima sound, has marked his 66th birthday with gratitude and messages from fans and fellow entertainers. His birthday falls on Nigeria’s Independence Day, October 1. The singer shared photographs in traditional attire and thanked God for life and grace. Comedian Basketmouth, actor Chinedu Ikedieze and other admirers sent birthday wishes in recognition of his long-running contribution to Nigerian music. Born in Umuahia, Abia State, Chimezie gained national attention in the 1980s with his blend of Igbo highlife, African rhythms, humour and social commentary. His 1984 debut album, "Respect Africa," featured the popular song "Because of English." His music has received renewed attention in recent years after Davido said his song "With You" drew inspiration from "Because of English." Chimezie later appeared in the video for the Davido and Omah Lay collaboration and signed a publishing deal with Sony Music Publishing West Africa in 2025.
