Oyo APM Candidates Sue Party Over Planned Fresh LG Primary

Thirty-three chairmanship candidates and 351 councillorship candidates of the Allied Peoples Movement in Oyo State have filed a suit at the Federal High Court in Ibadan over plans for fresh primaries ahead of the local government elections. The plaintiffs said they emerged from primaries held on August 3, 2026, which were monitored by the Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission. They claim the results were subsequently submitted to the commission. They are asking the court to stop the party from holding another primary, arguing that OYSIEC should not recognise multiple APM candidates for the same council and ward positions. The dispute follows the emergence of rival factions within the party over its candidates.

With 33 chairmanship and 351 councillorship candidates involved, this looks like a major internal dispute rather than a minor complaint.

A fresh primary is not automatically unfair, but the party should clearly address why the earlier process is being challenged.

The court should clarify the valid primary process quickly, so candidates and voters are not left uncertain ahead of the local government elections.
