Zamfara at 30: Six Governors and an Unfinished Journey
As Zamfara marks 30 years since its creation, I reflect on the state’s journey through political change, development, economic hardship and the continuing challenge of insecurity. Created from the old Sokoto State on 1 October 1996, Zamfara’s founding was celebrated as a chance for greater autonomy, representation and closer government for its people. The struggle for statehood raised high expectations for institutions, infrastructure and improved public services. I also remember those who led the campaign for the state’s creation and examine the administrations that followed. Zamfara’s story contains progress and setbacks, with important lessons still to be learned from three decades of leadership.
