Niger Junta Says It Foiled Mutiny Attempt After Overnight Gunfire in Niamey

Niger Junta Says It Foiled Mutiny Attempt After Overnight Gunfire in Niamey

Niger’s military government says it has crushed an attempted mutiny after heavy gunfire and explosions were heard overnight in Niamey. The Defence Ministry said a group of soldiers opened fire at sensitive locations and entered the 101 Military Camp near Diori Hamani International Airport, where they reportedly held some colleagues hostage. Security forces were deployed and later restored calm, according to Defence Minister Salifou Modi. Security sources said there was also an attempt to breach the perimeter around the presidential palace. National television broadcasts were briefly disrupted, while authorities urged residents to remain calm. No official casualty figures have been released. The incident is a fresh test for the military junta that has ruled Niger since the 2023 coup, as the country continues to battle jihadist attacks and instability in the Sahel.
