Abia Disability Commission Seeks Inclusive Rollout of New GBV Survivors Law
The Abia State Disability Commission has called for women and girls with disabilities to be fully included in the implementation of the state’s new law on rehabilitation and support for survivors of rape, defilement, domestic violence and human trafficking. At a stakeholder meeting in Umuahia, the commission’s chairman, Dr. David Anyaele, said the law must remove physical, communication and institutional barriers. He noted that survivors with disabilities face added risks because of dependence on caregivers, stigma, isolation and inaccessible reporting channels. He urged the government to make rehabilitation centres wheelchair-accessible, provide information in formats suitable for blind, Deaf and intellectually disabled survivors, and train staff on disability inclusion. He also called for women with disabilities and their organisations to be involved in monitoring the law. Stakeholders at the meeting said awareness of the 2026 law remains low, with preliminary consultations showing that only about five per cent of participants knew it existed. They stressed that the law’s success will depend on accessible protection, justice and rehabilitation for every survivor.
