A Proposal for a Post-Election Commission to Protect Nigeria’s Democracy
I support Peter Obi, but I do not believe Nigeria’s future should depend on any one candidate. Elections can change governments, yet they cannot by themselves build trust, prevent retaliation or guarantee national stability. I propose a Sovereign Commission for Democratic Sustainability and National Stability. Before the 2027 election, presidential candidates, political parties, labour, the media and civil society should make public commitments to peaceful competition and post-election dialogue. The proposed commission would encourage candidates to accept lawful dispute resolution, promote a time-bound inclusive government, support transparent funding for qualifying political parties and examine reforms to winner-takes-all politics. It would not replace INEC, the courts or the National Assembly. The aim is not to silence opposition or weaken democracy. It is to ensure that Nigerians can campaign fiercely, vote freely and resolve disputes without violence, repression or political exclusion.
