Stakeholders Demand Probe of Coastal Highway’s Role in Lagos Flooding and Seek Compensation

Real estate leaders are calling for an independent investigation into whether changes to the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway’s design and alignment worsened recent flooding in parts of Lagos State. Engr Stella Okengwu praised the state government’s mitigation efforts but urged technical experts to examine deviations from the original 2006 gazetted route and drainage design. She noted her earlier engineering objections and warned that unexpected demolitions along the altered alignment have shaken investor confidence. Mr Stephen Akintayo pointed to blocked drainage, poor environmental planning and the highway’s elevated level as key factors trapping floodwaters in adjoining communities. He rejected blanket blame on developers and urged probes into irregular approvals by government officials. Both stakeholders proposed an independent compensation fund managed by federal, state and industry representatives. They stressed that infrastructure development must respect approved plans, environmental regulations and the rule of law to attract and protect both local and diaspora investment.
