SERAP Urges UN to Invoke Article 99 Over Nigeria’s Escalating Security Crisis
Rights group SERAP has asked UN Secretary-General António Guterres to invoke Article 99 of the UN Charter and formally place Nigeria’s worsening security situation before the Security Council. In an open letter dated May 30, 2026, the organisation warns that a wave of killings, abductions and mass displacement across Oyo, Benue, Borno, Plateau, Kaduna and Zamfara now threatens regional peace. SERAP highlights the abduction of 25 pupils and seven teachers in Oyo State, bomb explosions in Maiduguri that killed at least 23 people and attacks on displaced-persons camps as evidence of the deepening crisis. SERAP argues that putting Nigeria on the Council’s agenda would sustain international scrutiny, support independent investigations and push for stronger civilian protection. The group calls for regular Security Council briefings, accountability for perpetrators and coordinated global action to address the humanitarian fallout.
