Sharia Council Urges Tinubu, NASS to Slow Down State Police Plan

Sharia Council Urges Tinubu, NASS to Slow Down State Police Plan

The Supreme Council for Shariah in Nigeria has urged President Bola Tinubu, the National Assembly and state governments to avoid rushing plans to create state police. The council said the proposal could have far-reaching implications for justice, national unity and Nigeria’s future. It called for wider public consultations, transparent hearings and national consensus before constitutional amendments are made. While acknowledging Nigeria’s worsening insecurity, the council argued that state police is not a quick fix. It said poor funding, corruption, inadequate personnel, weak intelligence, poor welfare, outdated equipment and weak coordination must first be addressed within existing security agencies. It also warned that any state police system must not be used for political intimidation or discrimination, stressing that policing must protect every Nigerian equally under the Constitution.
