Omokri Warns Atiku’s Subsidy and Border Reopening Plan Could Fuel Smuggling
Reno Omokri has warned that reinstating fuel subsidy while fully reopening Nigeria’s land borders could increase petrol smuggling, weaken the naira and worsen insecurity. He was reacting to Atiku Abubakar’s pledge to reopen land borders if elected in 2027. Atiku said prolonged border restrictions had disrupted cross-border trade, hurt businesses and pushed many young traders out of work. Omokri argued that Nigeria previously lost about 25 million litres of subsidised petrol daily to smuggling when borders were open. He also cited the impact of smuggled rice and poultry on local producers, and urged the government to strengthen border security before any full reopening.
