International Day of Democracy: Why Democracy Must Go Beyond Elections
As the world marks the International Day of Democracy, we reaffirm the importance of participation, accountability, inclusion, justice and respect for human dignity. Democracy is sustained not only by elections, but by institutions that serve the people, leaders who remain accountable and citizens who take part in public life. Diverse voices must be able to speak without fear. In Nigeria, democracy should translate into good governance, responsive leadership, credible institutions, social justice and meaningful opportunities for citizens to influence decisions that affect them. We must listen before condemning, engage before confronting and hold power accountable through lawful, peaceful civic action. Democracy belongs to all of us, and its strength depends on what we collectively make of it.
