Nigeria Boycotts Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference in South Africa Over Xenophobia Concerns
Nigeria’s House of Representatives has suspended official visits and legislative engagements in South Africa over concerns about xenophobic attacks on Nigerians living there. The decision means Nigeria will not attend the 69th Commonwealth Parliamentary Association conference in Cape Town, which has drawn more than 800 delegates. CPA chairperson Christopher Kalila said the issue was raised with the association weeks earlier. He added that an Africa-wide committee has been set up to address the dispute and will present recommendations when its work is complete. South Africa’s Parliament Speaker, Thoko Didiza, said migration-related tensions affect several Commonwealth countries and expressed hope that the conference would help identify shared solutions.
