Saudi Arabia, France Announce $7bn Theme Park Project Near Paris

France and Saudi Arabia have announced a €6 billion ($7 billion) plan to build three theme parks near Cergy-Pontoise, about 30 kilometres from Paris. Saudi-backed Qiddiya is expected to lead the project, which French officials say could create about 22,000 jobs. One park may be built around a manga concept, with Dragon Ball Z named as a possible attraction. The parks will be developed in stages, although no opening date or full details of the remaining parks have been confirmed. The agreement came during Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s visit to Paris and forms part of wider deals involving energy, artificial intelligence, transport, health and defence. Supporters see the project as a major investment boost for France and part of Saudi Arabia’s push to expand its tourism and entertainment industry beyond oil. The visit also drew criticism from French journalists’ unions and rights advocates over Saudi Arabia’s human rights record and the 2018 killing of Jamal Khashoggi.
