Good Samaritans Foil Parolee’s Attempted Sexual Assault in Central Park

Lateef Caldwell, 30, a homeless man on parole, allegedly attacked a 45-year-old woman near 109th Street and East Drive in Central Park at about 5:40 p.m. on Monday, March 23. Bystanders and police intervened and stopped the assault. The victim, who was wearing a hijab, escaped without injury. Caldwell tried to run but was arrested two blocks away. He now faces charges of attempted rape, attempted sexual assault and sexual abuse. Caldwell was released on parole less than a year ago after serving three years for a similar 2022 offense. His post-release supervision runs until 2029 and his arraignment in the new case is pending.
