Army Honours Late Lt.-Gen. Obiakor’s Peacekeeping Legacy
The Nigerian Army has honoured the late Lt.-Gen. Chikadibia Obiakor, describing him as a distinguished soldier whose service strengthened Nigeria’s standing in international peacekeeping. At a tribute event in Abuja, the Chief of Army Staff said Obiakor combined professionalism, courage and humility throughout his military career. He was commissioned into the Nigerian Army in 1973 and later held key command and operational roles in Nigeria and abroad. Obiakor commanded the ECOMOG Artillery Brigade in Liberia and became the first Force Commander of the UN Mission in Liberia. He was also the first African appointed as Military Adviser for UN Peacekeeping Operations, and later led major UN investigations in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Syria.
