Student Shot at Ignatius Ajuru University as Management Suspends SUG Week Activities

A 100-level student of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Rumuolumeni, Rivers State, has sustained severe gunshot injuries after a shooting on campus. The incident occurred two days after an armed clash reportedly linked to a supremacy dispute between suspected Vikings and Ku Klux Klan cult groups. The injured student was taken to hospital for emergency surgery to remove bullet pellets, while friends reportedly began raising money for his treatment. The Rivers State Police Command is investigating the violence. The university has suspended all remaining Students’ Union Government Week activities and directed students to resume normal lectures from Thursday, August 13, 2026, warning against acts that threaten peace and security on campus.

It is troubling that a 100-level student was reportedly caught up in violence so early in campus life.

Suspending SUG Week activities may be necessary, but it does not by itself address the reported armed clashes.

The immediate focus should be medical support for the injured student and clear safety updates for everyone on campus.
