FG Moves to Resolve Scrap Dealers’ Strike as Steel Sector Talks Begin
The Federal Government has asked scrap metal dealers to suspend their industrial action and return to negotiations over disputes affecting Nigeria’s steel value chain. The dealers allege that scrap is being undervalued, weighing scales are being manipulated, steel firms are buying scrap directly and billets are being imported. The Ministry of Steel Development says it is consulting the National Steel Council on balanced measures to address the concerns. Officials will meet the association’s leadership for mediation. A prolonged strike could disrupt scrap supplies to steel manufacturers and affect businesses and workers in the trade. The government says resolving the dispute is important to its plan to expand local steel production to 10 million metric tonnes annually by 2030.
