Cross River Police Arrest Suspect Over ATM Card Theft and Fraud
The Cross River State Police Command has paraded a suspect accused of stealing ATM cards and withdrawing money from bank customers in Calabar. Police said the suspect allegedly targeted people having difficulty at ATM points, posing as someone offering help before taking their cards and obtaining their PINs. He was arrested on October 6 after police worked with bank managers to track the alleged operation. The suspect reportedly began the scheme in April 2026 and allegedly accessed about ₦1.4 million from victims. Five ATM cards were recovered from his home, while his alleged getaway driver is still being sought. Residents have been advised not to share their PINs, allow strangers handle their cards, or leave an ATM without confirming that their card has been returned. Customers should contact their bank immediately if a card is missing.
