South Africans Vote in Local Elections Amid Anger Over Crime and Failing Services
Millions of South Africans are voting in municipal elections as frustration over corruption, crime, unemployment and unreliable water and electricity supplies puts pressure on the African National Congress (ANC). Opinion polls suggest the party could win less than 40% of the vote, after falling below 50% in the 2021 municipal elections. The results could leave several cities with hung councils and unstable coalitions. Johannesburg is a key contest, after seven mayors served there since 2021 amid repeated coalition breakdowns and persistent service problems. The Democratic Alliance is favoured to retain control of Cape Town. The vote could also shape the political landscape ahead of South Africa’s 2029 national election and influence the ANC’s leadership succession. About 29 million people are registered to vote, with results expected on Sunday.
