Okoson Community Protests Alleged Ancestral Land Takeover by Oil Firms in Rivers
Residents of Okoson Community in Andoni Local Government Area of Rivers State have protested an alleged takeover of their ancestral land by Green Energy International Limited and Lekoil Nigeria Limited. The community alleged that heavy equipment entered the area in August, clearing land, destroying economic trees and disturbing a cemetery and traditional shrines. It said the companies did not obtain consent from the recognised custodians of the land. Okoson leaders also alleged that an individual without authority collected ₦94 million from the companies for a land lease. They have appealed to the Federal Government, Rivers State Government and security agencies to intervene. The companies and the individual had not responded when the report was filed.
