Nigeria’s Game Developers Should Mine Local Myths for Original Stories

Nigeria’s gaming industry has a deep pool of stories in its histories, legends and cultural traditions. Yet developers often look first to foreign worlds for inspiration. Global franchises have shown that mythology can support games with lasting appeal, and Nigerian cultures offer equally rich material for original game worlds. My experience building Ṣàngó: The Thunder God reinforced this for me. Ṣàngó already carries generations of Yoruba history and meaning. I drew on elements such as the òṣé Ṣàngó and used collectible cards to introduce cultural context without turning gameplay into a lesson. Cultural identity alone is not enough. Nigerian games must still deliver strong gameplay, challenge and reasons for players to return. But stories rooted in Nigeria can give developers an identity that is difficult to copy. With traditions from across the country to explore, local creators have many opportunities to build games that feel both Nigerian and globally compelling.
