Do Nigerians Abroad Sometimes Overstate How Difficult Life Is at Home?

Nigeria has serious problems, and nobody should deny that. But some Nigerians abroad describe life here as though the whole country is permanently without power and everyone is struggling in exactly the same way. During family calls, someone who left Nigeria years ago may begin explaining Nigeria to people who still live here. They speak as if those of us experiencing the country daily cannot understand our own reality. Some people abroad may still be judging Nigeria by the version they left behind. Life overseas also comes with rent pressure, loneliness, multiple jobs and difficult weather, but those parts are often left out of the conversation. Nigeria is not one single experience. Many people are struggling, others are managing, and some are doing well and have no plans to relocate. Leaving can improve a person's life, but staying does not mean a person lacks ambition.
